MAKING A DIFFERENCE

(FAZENDO A DIFERENÇA)

While I was walking down the beach, I began to see a man in the distance.

Enquanto eu estava andando pela praia, eu comecei a ver um homem à distância.

As I came nearer, I noticed that the man was bending down, picking something up and throwing it out into the water.

Quando cheguei mais perto, percebi que o homem estava se curvando, apanhando algo e atirando-o para fora na água.

He did that many times. Time and again he continued throwing things out into the ocean.

Ele fez isso muitas vezes. Uma e outra vez ele continuou a jogar coisas fora no oceano.

As I came even closer, I saw that he was a fisherman. He was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the water.

Quando cheguei mais perto, vi que ele era um pescador. Ele estava apanhando estrelas do mar que haviam sido levadas para a praia e, uma de cada vez, as estava lançando de volta à água.

I was curious. I approached the fisherman and said: "Good morning, friend. I was wondering what you are doing."

Eu estava curioso. Aproximei-me do pescador e disse: ". Bom dia, amigo, eu queria saber o que você está fazendo."

"I’m throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it's low tide right now and all of these starfish are up here on the sand. If I don't throw them back into the water, they'll die up here from lack of oxygen."

"Estou jogando as estrelas do mar de volta ao oceano. Você vê, é maré baixa agora e todas as estrelas do mar estão até aqui na areia. Se eu não jogá-los de volta para a água, eles vão morrer aqui por falta de oxigênio ".

"I understand", I said, "but there are thousands of starfish on this beach. You can't possibly get to all of them.

"Eu entendo", eu disse, "mas há milhares de estrelas do mar nesta praia. Você não pode pegar a todos elas.

There are simply too many. And don’t you realize that at this time this probably happening on hundred of beaches all up and down this coast? Can't you see that you can't possibly make a difference?"

Há simplesmente muitos demais. E você não percebe que neste momento isso provavelmente está acontecendo em centenas de praias acima e abaixo desta costa? Você não pode ver que você não pode possivelmente fazer a diferença? "

The man smiled, bent down one more time and picked up another starfish. He threw it back into the sea and answered, "I made a difference to that one!"

O homem sorriu, abaixou-se mais uma vez e pegou uma outra estrela do mar. Ele jogou de volta para o mar e respondeu: "Eu fiz a diferença para essa!"
